Opt-Out

If you do not want the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must decline or opt-out of coverage by submitting a waiver. You may only opt-out of coverage during the following Waiver Periods:

All international students are automatically enrolled in the University of South Alabama's Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). The insurance fee will be charged to students' accounts. If students have alternative health insurance coverage, a waiver may be submitted.

To waive the SHIP, the university requires that students provide proof of coverage comparable to the coverage provided by the University's SHIP. Please be advised that the waiver request will be reviewed and verified active with the insurance carrier. 

Waiver Requirements:
  • Policy provides Medical Benefits (Ex. Both emergency and non-emergency health care and mental health care benefits) of at least $100,000 per accident or illness.
  • A deductible no greater than $500 per accident or illness.
  • Coverage for repatriation of remains (a minimum of $25,000 toward such expenses or, if an amount is not specified, the policy must specify coverage of all reasonable and necessary expenses for repatriation.)
  • Medical evacuation coverage is equal to or greater than $50,000.
  • The claims administrator is based in the United States and has a US telephone number, address for submission of claims. *Students will be responsible for submitting their own claims.
